18/11/2008

Fast Show actor John Thomson has cut the ribbon to the Christmas markets around Manchester.

In addition to Albert Square, which is considered to be the heart of the winter stalls, another site in Exchange Square opened today.

The Peter Pan actor took time out from playing Hook at the Opera House to declare the range of European and local goods shops officially open.

Visitors will be able to buy festive gifts, art and craft, fashion, food and beer up to Christmas Eve.

Councillor Pat Karney said: "There is always an incredible buzz around the Christmas markets."

Manchester Christmas markets celebrates its tenth birthday this year.

Stalls are trading from Albert Square, Brazennose Street, St Ann's Square, Exchange Street, Exchange Square and New Cathedral Street.

The markets are all open into the evening, with Brazzenose Street selling the beer and Exchange Street specialising in arts and crafts.
