Lead call after vicar savaged by dog
21/11/2008
Dog owners have been urged to keep pets on leads after a vicar was savagely attacked in her own churchyard.
The reverend Hilary Evens was bitten five times by an Alsatian at St Peter's Church in Blackley in September.
She suffered bruises from being knocked to the ground in the attack.
After the incident volunteers have been given dog alarms after reports of a Rottweiler seen off a lead in the graveyard.
Manchester city councillor Paul Andrews "We don't believe responsible dog owners will object to this proposal, as we are simply asking them to leave their dogs on leads when they walk through the churchyard's gate."
People are being asked about what they think of a move to ban dogs off the leash at hundreds of places of worship across the city, including synagogues, mosques and temples.
Several areas in Manchester are already specified as dog-on-a-lead zones.
Dog owners have 45 days to give their views before the new proposals are introduced in January.
