M56 improvements to be "revised"
19/08/2008
The Highways Agency is to spend £3.8 million on improving traffic flow on the M56 after last year's alterations made things worse for motorists.
Junction 7 near Altrincham is to be "revised" in order to ease congestion during the morning rush hour.
Highways bosses have admitted that changes made last September - at a cost of £1.5 million - have resulted in increased delays for drivers.
The agency now intends to restore three lanes on the main carriageway.
Highways Agency project sponsor Neal Symmons said: "We have monitored and evaluated the scheme and listened to drivers' experiences, which is why we are embarking on this new work."
The improvements are due to start on Tuesday August 26th. Most of the work will be carried out overnight, taking around 22 weeks to complete.
In related news, the agency is warning drivers that traffic around the M56 and M6 is likely to be busy over the bank holiday weekend.
Around 30,000 music lovers are expected to head to the annual Creamfields festival near Runcorn.
