Manchester minimum wage
14/11/2008
Manchester city council has drawn up plans to introduce a new minimum wage.
More than 850 employees could benefit from the proposed rise that could see a rise of more than £1 an hour in the national average.
If the move is approved by the personnel committee on Wednesday, other parts of the public sector would be encouraged to adopt the plans, reported Crains Manchester Business.
Executive member for finance and human resources, councillor Bernard Priest, said the plan had been designed to attract and retain quality employees.
"We recognise the importance of lower-paid workers to the development of Manchester as a world class city," he added.
It would see wages increase to £6.47 per hour compared with £5.73, the publication reported.
Meanwhile, Unison is calling for a national minimum wage of £7.45 per hour by 2010 and for the government to get rid of disproportionate pay for under 21-year-olds.
