More people will work from home in 2033
04/09/2008
There will be fewer high rise buildings and less cars on the road in Manchester as more people work from home in 2033, predict IT giants Microsoft.
A recent snapshot of the next 25 years by Microsoft Windows Mobile predicted cities losing their nine-to-five workforce.
More than half of employees already work flexible hours according to PA.
A total of 70 per cent of people said they had a good work-life balance in the survey.
Microsoft researcher James McCarthy said there would be more of a work-life overlap in 2033.
Cafes, shops, offices and apartments would merge in new multi-purpose spaces with green wi fi spots, he said.
There would be no need for tall office blocks as more people would work from home and there would be more pedestrianised areas as people do away with the need for cars.
There may be less congestion, but there was also a danger less people would socialise, the study revealed.
Manchester city centre commands huge demand for office space with predictions one million sq ft would be leased by the end of the year.
Tall buildings are also commonplace, notably the Hilton Tower. The architect is embarking on a new hotel set to be complete by 2010.
