Music student wins thousands
19/11/2008
A student composer has won a share of £45,000 awarded for her talent in composing music.
Emily Howard of the University of Manchester will share the money with seven other people over the next three years.
It will help her do what she said she loves best compose music.
Ms Howard said: "Id like to write longer orchestral pieces - and this award will help me do that."
The award is the latest of a long line of credits for the 29-year-old who is studying a PhD at the university.
She has secured a post as a music lecturer at Leeds University and is currently composer in residence for Liverpool City Council.
One of her pieces, Magnetite, opened the season at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and is dedicated to Ms Howard's 93-year-old grandmother who lives in the city.
Ms Howard is being tutored by Professor John Casken at the university who studied in Poland before making his name in the UK.
