Third most popular destination in the UK
14/11/2008
Manchester has been named the third most popular place to visit for tourists during 2007.
According to figures released by Visit Manchester, the city received 971,000 international guests last year, Crain's Manchester Business reported.
The figure was believed to have been down to attractions like The Museum of Science & Industry, The Lowry and Manchester Art Gallery.
In total tourism contributed an estimated £5.6 billion to the Greater Manchester economy.
Visit Manchesters marketing director Paul Simpson told Crain's: "The significant development of the citys tourism product, coupled with the continued rise of Manchesters profile on the international stage, has left us in a very strong position from which to build on."
Only London and Edinburgh ranked higher than Manchester with the Lonely Planet's top tip for a city visit in 2009, Glasgow, failing to enter the top three.
