US professor of glam rock to visit Salford
29/03/2007
Greater Manchester students could soon be learning about the likes of rock heroes David Bowie and Marc Bolan in an academic setting.
A visiting professor from the US has been invited to Salford University to teach music enthusiasts about 1970s glam rock performance art.
Dr Philip Auslander, professor at the school of literature, communication and culture at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, has been appointed campus fellow at Salford's school of media, music and performance.
"I find the whole subject of glam rock fascinating but was surprised to find that it's been left aside in American and UK history of rock," he told Salford University.
"I'm very interested in the performance dimension of popular music and with its theatrical performances by the likes of Bolan and Bowie, glam rock was the obvious choice."
Dr Auslander has written on numerous topics including theatre, popular music, stand-up comedy and courtroom procedures.
He has also authored a number of books, including Performing Glam Rock: Gender and Theatricality in Popular Music.
