University to manage DNA samples

The University of Manchester has been awarded around £4 million to develop ways to manage DNA and other biological samples for research purposes.

Scientists at the university will work alongside fellow professionals across Europe under the auspices of the Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure.

This scheme, which will link existing and new biobanks in various EU states, has been described by the university's Dr Martin Yuille as an important addition to the north-west's science sector.

He added: "It will counter fragmentation in Europe that is impeding access to valuable resources essential for translating the human genome sequence into health benefits."

Earlier this year, the government launched the Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) on Oxford Road as part of a strategy to make the UK a global leader in scientific and medical research.

Manchester BRC is run by the University of Manchester and Central Manchester Hospitals.
