Carrick hoping to stake claim for England place
18/11/2008
Michael Carrick has admitted England's decimated midfield ranks in the run-up to the Germany friendly gives him a good chance of claiming a regular first-team place.
The Manchester United playmaker has seen his opportunities limited in international football through a combination of injuries and a loss of form for his club.
But following the withdrawals of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard through injury, Carrick looks set to earn a rare start in the centre of midfield in Berlin.
"Maybe this is a good chance for me and now that I am here I want to play and try to stay in there," Carrick said.
"I want to push for a starting place, but everyone is the same.
"I know it will be a different team to the one from the last couple of games, but I think we have a strong squad and all the players are performing week in and week out in the Premier League.
"Of course it is going to be a tough game away against Germany, but the mood in the camp is really good and confidence is high.
"We are all looking forward to the game."
