Cole agrees to Nottingham Forest switch

05/07/2008

Andrew Cole has agreed to join Championship side Nottingham Forest on a free transfer following his release from Sunderland earlier in the summer.

Cole was born in Nottingham and will now try and help his hometown club move back into the Premier League following a number of seasons in the lower divisions.

The striker is expected to sign a 12 month contract next week and will become the fourth signing of the off-season for manager Colin Calderwood.

The 36-year-old spent some time in the Championship last season when Sunderland sent him on loan to Burnley – where he scored six goals in 13 appearances.

Calderwood said Cole still wants to achieve things in his career and the Forest manager is delighted to have captured the former England international.

"It was clear when I met Andrew earlier this week that he still has a desire to be successful," said Calderwood.

"He doesn't just want to play, he wants to be successful and we're delighted that he's chosen us because it shows he thinks we might be the vehicle to get him what he wants."

Calderwood hopes the experience that Cole brings to the dressing room will inspire the rest of the squad to achieve great things during the forthcoming season.

He said: "I think he will be a great conduit for all the younger members of our squad but the level that he has played and trained at will hopefully help lift the level of all our players."

Cole won the Premier League five times during his spell with Manchester United, along with two FA Cups and the Champions League.

He remains the second highest goalscorer in Premier League history on 187 goals, behind Alan Shearer.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18670283-ADNFCR
