Jenas called up in place of injured Carrick
18/08/2008
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jermaine Jenas has been called up to the England squad for the friendly international against Czech Republic on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old replaces injured former team-mate Michael Carrick, who has been withdrawn as a result of an ankle injury.
Carrick was forced off after just 25 minutes of Manchester United's Premier League opener at home to Newcastle United on Sunday, which ended 1-1.
And club boss Sir Alex Ferguson ruled his player out of the England squad, saying his ankle was badly swollen and he would miss at least two weeks' worth of action as a result.
The match at Wembley on Wednesday evening represents the last chance for manager Fabio Capello to experiment with his lineup before the serious business of qualification for the World Cup in 2010.
However, the Italian tactician is expected to name as strong a side as possible against the Czechs, who were knocked out in the group stages of the European Championships by Turkey.
