Divine Comedy singer pens musical

The Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon has penned a musical to be performed in London's theatreland.

The National Theatre has confirmed that Hannon, known for his humorous lyrics in songs such as Something for the Weekend and National Express, has put together a musical version of the Arthur Ransome classic Swallows and Amazons.

A spokeswoman for the theatre confirmed that the adaptation was in the "developmental stage" and was unlikely to hit the stage for a number of months.

Hannon has been the driving performance for Divine Comedy ever since they first formed in 1989 and has at times performed solo under the band's banner.

His most recent album, the band's ninth, was Victory For The Comic Muse but it failed to make the same commercial impact as 1996's Casanova and Fin de Siecle two years later.

Ransome's book was published in 1930 and details the sailing adventures of a group of schoolchildren in the Lake District.
