Gunners defender Sagna out for 'at least three weeks'

27/03/2008

Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has been sidelined for at least three weeks due to an ankle injury he sustained against Chelsea last week.

The Frenchman was taken off towards the end of the Gunners' 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge – a result which severely dented the north London side's title challenge.

And now manager Arsene Wenger is due to be without his highly-rated fullback until late April or possibly longer following scans on Sagna's injury.

"He has an ankle injury and the first news that we have is that he could be out for quite a while," Wenger told Arsenal TV Online.

"I don't know [exactly] how long he will be out but I feel it will be three weeks at least. Five is the [worst case scenario].

"I have seen the injury again on tape. He wanted to kick the ball out and he twisted his ankle. That made it a bad injury."

The blow of losing Sagna is a further setback for the Gunners, who have dropped down to third place in the Premier League table after leading both top side Manchester United and Chelsea earlier this month.

Wenger's men find themselves six points adrift of leaders United with just seven games of the season left.

The Gunners do have a Champions League quarter-final against Premier League rivals Liverpool to look forward to next month, although Wenger is likely to be without Sagna for both legs as well as the semi-final if they make it to that stage.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18525741-ADNFCR
