Milan target Lampard

28/01/2007

AC Milan are targeting Chelsea's Frank Lampard after being alerted to a Fifa rule that would allow the England midfielder to buy out his contract at the end of this season.

The Fifa rule states that any player can buy themselves out of their contract, if they signed it before the age of 28, once they have served three years of that contract.

AC Milan's, general director Ariedo Braida, said: "If this is the case, of course it is interesting news.

"Lampard is a very good player, one of the best around. I wasn't aware of it at all. I am glad I have been made aware of this situation."

The England man has been rumoured to be seeking a new deal at Chelsea, along with captain John Terry, but the uncertainty over manager Jose Mourinho's future has delayed proceedings.

Lampard's agent Steve Kutner says he is yet to reach a satisfactory agreement with the club and that negotiations will continue in the future.

Kutner said: "At the moment we're far apart. The ball is in Chelsea's court.

"At the moment Frank is just concentrating on trying to win trophies for Chelsea - but if he wants to leave at the end of the season, he can do it."

Milan's city rivals, Inter, are also said to be monitoring the situation and would be keen if any potential deal could be struck.

However with Terry reported to be close to signing a new deal it is likely that Lampard will follow suit in the coming months.
