Carmont joins Warriors
27/11/2007
Wigan Warriors have agreed a deal with NRL side Newcastle Knights to sign Samoan international centre George Carmont.
The 29-year-old joins Warriors on a two-year contract after making 60 appearances down under.
He joins fellow Samoan international Harrison Hansen at the JJB Stadium ahead of the 2008 Super League, and will meet his new team-mates when they convene for pre-season training between Christmas and new year.
Carmont said: "This is a great opportunity for me to join one of the biggest names in world rugby. I really enjoyed my time at the Newcastle Knights and would like to thank the club and their fantastic fans for their support.
"I am excited about the prospect of playing in England and joining this wonderful club with its great tradition and history.
"I have spoken to some of the Super League players in the Samoan squad, in particular Harrison Hansen, and I am really looking forward to joining Wigan Warriors."
Wigan head coach Brian Noble added: "I know George well and I am delighted to have signed a player of his quality.
"He has been excellent in the NRL for the last couple of years and is a good addition to the Wigan squad."
Carmont could be set to make his Warriors debut against Harlequins at the Stoop, which will be Wigan's first port of call in the new season.
And new Wigan owner Ian Lenagan said he is "delighted" to welcome the player to join the squad as they look to make the playoffs again this year and challenge champions Leeds Rhinos for their Super League crown.
"His try-scoring ability and excellent defensive qualities add value and strength to our back line without breaking the bank," Lenagan said.
"Brian Noble and Joe Lydon worked hard behind the scenes to secure George's services and the deal was signed after Samoa booked their place in the World Cup finals."
