Metrolink expansion underway
03/10/2008
Work on a new Metrolink extension between Manchester city centre and Chorlton has got underway.
This forms part of a £575 million expansion of the tram network which should see it reach twice its current size.
Lines between Oldham and Rochdale are also being added to the system, along with a connection linking East Manchester and Droylsden.
Councillor Matt Colledge of Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority was in Chorlton observing the work taking place.
He said it is "great" to see to see the line opening again, as it was closed to rail passengers back in 1967.
"Metrolink has helped to transform other parts of Greater Manchester and I'm pleased that it will soon be arriving in Chorlton," Councillor Colledge added.
Meanwhile, transport authorities in the county have confirmed that more than 200 new ticket machines will be installed on the Metrolink network between now and 2011.
The touch-screen devices will be deployed at all existing stops and on the new lines over the next three years.
