British hurdlers leap into semis
11/08/2006
Andy Turner and David Hughes have ensured there will be some British interest in the semi-finals of the men's 110m hurdles in Gothenburg.
Commonwealth bronze medallist Turner lived up to his top billing by breezing to victory in heat two in a promising time of 13.52secs.
He pipped Dutchman Gregory Sedoc to the line and will now head into the next round full of confidence after his time ended fourth fastest.
The fourth heat then saw 22-year-old prospect Hughes join Turner in the semis despite him finishing in third place behind Russian Igor Peremota and German Jens Werrmann.
Hughes, the 2005 European under-23 champion, qualified by being a lucky loser with a decent time of 13.66secs.
Meanwhile, Latvian ace Stanislav Olijar clocked the fastest time of the day as he scorched home in heat five in a time of 13.25secs.
Ukrainian Serhiy Demydyuk finished second fastest on 13.47secs, fractionally ahead of Peremota and Turner.
The favourite for the gold medal, Frenchman Ladji Doucoure, the reigning world champion, recorded the seventh quickest time of 13.65secs.
The high hurdles semi-finals take place from 14:55 BST tomorrow with the final at 16:40 BST.
