Britons' greatest-ever Olympians revealed
24/06/2008
Dame Kelly Holmes and Sir Steve Redgrave have been voted among the six 'greatest-ever British Olympians' in a nationwide poll.
The two multiple gold medal winners, who were both major players in the successful London bid for the 2012 Games, join bid leader and current Olympic committee chairman Lord Sebastian Coe in the list.
Triple jumper Jonathan Edwards, swimmer Duncan Goodhew and hurdler Sally Gunnell complete the rundown.
The list was created after a poll commissioned by the National Lottery was setup in order to create a series of 'Olympic Champions' scratchcards spotlighting classic moments featuring the members of the celebrated sextet.
Proceeds from the series will go towards funding the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Dame Kelly is in full support of the initiative and described her involvement as "very exciting".
"It's
such an incredible line-up of Olympic Games gold medalists and I'm honoured that, thanks to the fantastic support I continue to receive from the British public, I've been invited to appear on the scratchcard," she added.
National Lottery is earmarked to provide £2.2 billion of the public money that will be committed to helping create an infrastructure to host the London Games in 2012.
