Chambers: Athletics is being cleaned up

20/08/2006

Disgraced British sprinter Dwain Chambers says athletics is in the process of "being cleaned up" and called on the sport to move forward.

Chambers, who served a two-year ban after testing positive for steroids, has controversially returned to the track to represent Great Britain.

Snubbed by his GB team-mate Darren Campbell, who said he could not forgive the sprinter after being stripped of his relay medals, Chambers was nevertheless given a warm reception when he returned to action in Birmingham at the Norwich Union International.

Now, as disquiet among some athletes persists over the inclusion of a proven drug cheat in the national squad and with reports emerging that fellow sprinter Marion Jones has tested positive for hormone abuse, Chambers has said the sport will come through a period of upheaval.

QI have paid my dues and I believe the crowd are forgiving," he commented, before going on to address what he said was a process of rehabilitation for athletics as it purges itself of suspected cheats.

"The sport has to be patient because it is going through a time where it is being cleaned up, so to speak. It is unfortunate that all the top athletes are falling like flies. All you can do now is be patient and get the sport back on a level playing field. There is a brighter future," he concluded.

The 28-year-old has also faced criticism for his refusal to detail the names of those who helped him set up contacts with the US, where he took the designer drugs which resulted in his ban.
