Chambers facing anxious wait
11/02/2008
The UK Athletics board has met today to decide whether Dwain Chambers will be in the Great Britain team for the World Indoor Championships next month.
Chambers, who was suspended from the sport for two years for use of a banned substance, won the 60 metres final at the World Indoor Trials over the weekend.
And as a result the sprinter should be rewarded with an automatic berth in the British squad for the event, subject to the UKA's selection policy.
However, it has been speculated that the selectors could impose the "exceptional circumstances" rule in order to deny him a place in the team as his selection may cause controversy.
Nevertheless, the 29-year-old's performance on the track has shown he is still capable of competing with the best talent in the world and could work in his favour.
Following his victorious performance, Chambers said: "Hopefully I will have done enough to get to the worlds.
"I'd like to believe my performance warrants that and I just hope the selectors do the right thing.
"Today has been worth everything I've been through, and it's not over yet as my goal is to win the World Indoor Championships."
UKA had originally hoped to disqualify him from competing at the weekend's trials because he had not been part of its drug-testing programme since 2006.
However, it later emerged that it did not have the legal footing to prevent Chambers from taking part, and he subsequently posted a winning time with a dominant performance and looks likely to force his way into the team on merit.
