Chambers finishes second on GB return
28/06/2006
Disgraced athlete Dwain Chambers finished in second place in the 100m on his return to the Great Britain team yesterday.
The 28-year old, who recently completed a two-year drug ban, finished strongly behind France's Roland Pognon who won in a time of 10.13 seconds in the European Cup in Malaga.
Chambers finished the race in 10.19 seconds, the same time as Russian Andrey Yepishin, but the Londoner was awarded second spot.
Elsewhere, Rhys Williams finished fourth in the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 50.61 seconds.
There was better luck for the women as Natasha Danvers-Smith went one better than her second place in the Commonwealth games in Melbourne, after winning the 400m in 55.65 seconds.
Also, Joice Maduaka was a surprise second-place in the 100m with a time of 11.29 seconds, narrowly behind Russia's Yuliya Gushchina.
In the 3,000m, Jo Pavey also went one-better than her silver medal in the Commonwealth games, triumphing in eight minutes 52.54 seconds.
In the 400m, Nicola Sanders produced an impressive performance after finishing second to the pre-race favourite Svetlana Pospelova.
Great Britain and Northern Ireland need a top-two placing to compete at the lucrative World Cup final in Athens in September.
