Chambers makes successful return
02/02/2008
Dwain Chambers has comfortably qualified for the UK trials for the World Indoor Championship as he made a dramatic return to competitive athletics.
The sprinter recorded an official time of 6.70 seconds as well as an unofficial time of 6.57 seconds over 60 metres at the Birmingham Games.
Such a performance put him easily within the 6.90 seconds standard, though it is still not certain whether Chambers will be allowed to compete at the forthcoming qualifiers in Sheffield.
UK Athletics have stated that they are determined to prevent the 29-year old from trying for a place in the British team due to his history of drug use.
After he tested positive for steroid THG in 2003, Chambers was banned for two years by UKA and the sport's officials have argued that they will not consider him for a place on the team unless he agrees to regular drug tests over the next year.
Should Chambers' name fail to be put forward by UKA for the qualifiers prior to Sunday's deadline for applications, his lawyers have stated they will be ready to take immediate legal action against the body.
Earlier this week, the IAAF, world athletics' governing body, stated that Chambers' comeback met appropriate rules as they had not been informed of the sprinter's retirement.
