Chambers 'may never race again'
12/12/2006
Shamed British sprinter Dwain Chambers may never race again according to his agent.
Cubie Seegobin, the athlete's Los Angeles-based representative, conclusively ruled Chambers out of the upcoming indoor athletics season and questioned the logic of the sprinter ever running to earn a living again.
Chambers was banned from athletics for testing positive for doping offences and only returned in June.
As part of his punishment for testing positive for the banned steroid THG, the 28-year-old was handed a two-year total ban and ordered to pay back all prize money he earned while engaging in substance abuse.
According to estimates, Chambers owes in excess of a six-figure sum to the British athletic federation and Seegobin claims that continuing to compete makes little fiscal sense for the London-born athlete.
"Personally I think because we have so much money to pay back, if he can find another way to make a living he will," Seegobin told the BBC.
"Dwain might only have a year or two of competition left and will have to pay most of his prize money back. This is my logic, not anything he's told me.
"He's training in England and will be ready for the outdoor season, but there are other things he's putting his attention into," Seegobin added.
Chambers has set his sights on competing in American Football and he is currently in training ahead of a Florida training camp meeting, which could herald a stint in NFL Europe before possibly graduating to the full professional system in the United States.
The sprinter will find out "this side of Christmas or just after" if he has made the cut to attend the Florida camp, according to NFL international's director of public affairs, David Tossell.
