Dibaba completes long distance double in 5,000m
22/08/2008
Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba has won her second long distance gold medal of the Beijing Olympics with victory in the women's 5,000m.
The 23-year-old won the 10,000m last Friday and completed a dream set of medals when she pipped Turkey's Elvan Abeylegesse to gold in today's race.
The pace was slow throughout as the runners jostled for position on track rather than trying to stretch the field.
And Dibaba timed her last-lap attack to perfection as she pulled away from the field with 400m to go.
Fellow Ethiopian Meseret Defar came home in third place to win the bronze medal ahead of the Kenya contingent featuring Sylvia Kibet and Vivian Cheruiyot.
