Disgraced Chambers edges closer to competing in Olympics
29/06/2008
Disgraced sprinter Dwain Chambers has boosted his quest to run in Beijing after running inside the Olympic qualifying standard.
The 30-year-old clocked 10.06 seconds in the 100-metre final in Germany yesterday. That bettered his time of 10.14 in the afternoon heats, both times were inside the Olympic 'A' standard.
It places him joint top of the British rankings with Tyrone Edgar, ahead of the British Olympic trials on July 11th.
But Chambers is banned from competing in any Olympics by the British Olympic Association (BOA) after failing a drugs test in 2003.
The sprinter will now challenge the ban in court so he can be picked for Beijing when the BOA names the Great Britain team before July 20th.
Chambers insists his performance in the meeting in Biberach proves he has the talent.
"I will always remain a clean athlete from here onwards," Chambers said.
"I've come of age now and I believe in what I say and I'm able to do the walking as well. That comes with age, experience and confidence.
"Now I've got the qualifier, I've just got to continue with my role which is competing and let the lawyers do their part.
"It's only a matter of time before I will be able to show what I can do when I get into the Olympic final."
Chambers served a two-year ban for testing positive for the designer steroid THG, one of seven banned substances he was taking at the time.
