Injured McConnell ruled out of 4x400m relay
22/08/2008
Lee McConnell has been ruled out of Great Britain's 4x400m relay team after tearing a quad muscle in her right leg.
The 29-year-old went out of the individual event last Sunday as she finished a disappointing sixth in the semi-finals in a time of 52.11 secs.
And after undergoing medical tests afterwards, it has been determined that McConnell picked up the injury during the race and should therefore take no further part in the Beijing Olympic Games.
Athletics team leader Dave Collins said: "It is a big disappointment for Lee.
"She has made a huge contribution to the success of our women's 4x400m relay squad in recent years.
"She has our sympathy and as ever, UK Athletics will work closely with the athlete to assist with the her return to full fitness."
The opening heats for the 4x400m relay event take place later today.
The British team run in the first of the two races, with Olympic 400m individual champion Christine Ohuruogu running the anchor leg.
