Maggi wins thriller in women's long jump
22/08/2008
Brazil's Maurren Higa Maggi has emerged triumphant after an exciting finish to the women's long jump final at the Beijing Olympics.
Maggi took the gold medal after second-placed Russian Tatyana Lebedeva fell just one centimetre short with her final jump of 7.03m after fouling four of her previous five attempts.
The Brazilian led from start to finish after jumping a season's best 7.04m with her first attempt.
And despite Lebedeva's efforts, which also included a season's best for her, the Russian was unable to match the South American.
Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare took the bronze medal with a personal best of 6.91m, while Great Britain's Jade Johnson finished seventh after jumping 6.64m with her second attempt.
