Powell equals own record
19/08/2006
Sprinter Asafa Powell has equalled his own 100m world record at the Golden League meeting in Zurich.
The Jamaican, who was delayed in arriving at the meet because of the disruption at European airports, clocked 9.77 seconds.
That was enough to equal the record he shares with American Justin Gatlin.
It was also the third time he had run 9.77sec following outings in Athens and Gateshead last year.
Powell said after the race that he was happy with his performance despite not breaking the record.
"One way or another there will come a time when I run under 9.77sec," he said.
The Golden League meeting in Zurich has been overshadowed by rumours surrounding US sprinter Marion Jones.
Jones has returned to the US citing personal reasons amid press reports that she had tested positive for a banned substance.
