Powell remains on course for jackpot
25/08/2006
Asafa Powell remains on course for a share of the $1 million Golden League jackpot after winning the 100 metres in Brussels.
The Jamaican world record holder clinched victory in 9.99 seconds, his slowest time in 2006, to make it five straight League victories.
Powell recovered from a slow start to edge out American Marcus Brunson by 0.07 seconds while Leonard Scott finished third.
Powell immediately threw his winning bouquet in anger as he felt the starter had fired the gun immediately after calling back the athletes that affected his bid to smash the world record.
The 23-year-old was hoping to set a new time to lift the sport in a week which has seen his rival Justin Gatlin banned for eight years for failing a drugs test and former Olympic champion Marion Jones was revealed to have tested positive for EPO.
It was Powell's tenth straight race he has run in under ten seconds and he is one of four athletes set to share the lucrative jackpot with one meeting remaining.
Compatriots Jeremy Wariner and Sanya Richards along with Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba are in contention.
Powell equalled his 100 metre record of 9.77 seconds last week in Zurich, the third time he has matched the record.
