Absent Khan to reappear in court on Thursday
24/07/2006
Amir Khan has been ordered to appear at Bolton magistrates court this Thursday after missing today's planned hearing.
The 19-year-old boxer is facing a charge of dangerous driving in connection with an accident on March 2nd this year which left a 40-year-old man with a broken leg.
Khan's solicitors had faxed the crown prosecution service to re-arrange today's hearing but the information was not relayed until this morning.
The Bolton teenager, who is currently in Bulgaria, was arrested last month and was given unconditional bail. He will now appear at the court at 09.45 BST on Thursday.
Khan is widely regarded as being Britain's brightest boxing prospect and has enjoyed an impressive eight-fight unbeaten start to his professional career since signing off from the amateur ranks in 2004 by winning a silver medal at the Athens Olympic Games.
His blossoming career could be seriously derailed, however, if he is hit with a jail sentence for his crime, although such a sentence appears unlikely.
His trial comes just over a month after his boxing hero and close friend, former world featherweight champion Prince Naseem Hamed was jailed for 15 months on a similar charge.
Hamed, 32, was said to be considering a comeback to the sport before he was found guilty of reckless driving after causing a 38-year-old man multiple injuries when his £300,000 Mercedes sports car collided head on with two other vehicles.
