Awesome Amir in a hurry
03/09/2006
Amir Khan barely broke sweat as he stormed through his ninth professional boxing bout in his hometown of Bolton last night.
The 19-year-old Athens Olympics silver medallist was simply too quick and far too powerful for Ryan Barrett who had promised to bring the fight to Khan.
In reality, Barrett lasted barely two minutes as he was floored three times in the opening round before the referee stopped the fight.
Two sharp right hands from Khan had the Thamesmead fighter down a first time after 60 seconds and he was clearly hurt by the succession of punches which followed.
"I was up for six rounds," Khan said. "Ryan is fit and strong and he's ranked a lot higher than me so it went well for me.
"He's only lost two out of 15. All the critics out there saying Amir's not getting the right fights. He also boxed a British eliminator fight so he's showed how good he was."
Khan is now due to make a step up in class when he returns to the ring in December and his promoter Frank Warren has hinted it will be his first fight of over eight rounds.
Khan meanwhile is still set on achieving his goal of making an impact on the world stage, something he feels he is ready to do.
"I want to be one of the youngest world champions ever and the way it's going, things are going alright," he said.
