Boxing champ Harrison arrested in Spain

17/10/2006

World featherweight boxing champion Scott Harrison has been arrested in Spain after allegations of theft and assault.

The 29-year-old Scot had been training in Malaga but was arrested in the city on October 6th, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

A spokesman for the Guardia Civil told the Daily Record: "Scott Harrison was arrested while he was allegedly trying to steal a car with another person near his home in Alhaurin el Grande.

"He was taken to the local police HQ, where he allegedly assaulted an officer by punching him twice in the face.

"He has already appeared before an investigating magistrate and been sent to prison pending a decision on his future."

Harrison is due to defend his World Boxing Organisation (WBO) belt against the undefeated Nicky Cook at the ExCel Arena in London on December 9th.

However, this bout would now appear to be in doubt, which raises yet more questions as to whether the troubled fighter, dubbed The Real McCoy, will be forced to retire from the sport.

No stranger to controversy, Harrison angered promoters and the WBO after withdrawing two days before his last scheduled fight in May.

He subsequently spent time at the Priory clinic because of depression and alcoholism but just four months later was charged by police with six offences including three of assault relating to a number of incidents earlier this summer.
