Britons eye opening after Klitschko exit
10/11/2005
Vitali Klitschko's decision to retire from boxing has opened the door for British heavyweights, according to the giant Ukrainian's last opponent.
Klitschko, 34, announced his shock retirement from the sport yesterday because of a series of recurring injuries.
But Brixton boxer Danny Williams, who suffered an eighth-round stoppage to the WBC heavyweight champion 11 months ago, believes that the decision has blown the division wide open.
"Klitschko retiring has opened the door," he said.
"With him going, it is going to be all change. I have no doubt that his decision to retire will make it easier for everyone else to challenge for a world title."
Williams, 32, earned his shot at the WBC belt by dispatching an ageing Mike Tyson but has since failed to build upon this major payday.
He now faces fellow Briton Audley Harrison at the London Excel Arena next month on the same bill that pits British champion Matt Skelton against another Tyson-conqueror, Irishman Kevin McBride.
And he added that with Klitschko going, next month's fights are suddenly hugely more significant and the winner of either could well find themselves competing for a world title.
"I was already fired up for this fight but this just gives me that extra bit of determination. I can't wait for December 10th," Williams added.
