Brixton Bomber 'living in an oxygen tent'

22/06/2006

Danny Williams says he is ready to defeat Matt Skelton after living in an oxygen tent for eight weeks as part of his preparations for the heavyweight rematch.

The 'Brixton Bomber' will have a rematch with Skelton on July 8th after winning a split decision over the Bedford fighter in their contest in February.

As part of his efforts to boost his stamina and fitness, Williams revealed he had been "living in a tent", in conditions akin to high altitude.

Spending up to 12 hours each day in the tent, the fighter said he had suffered in a bid to improve his longevity.

"It's no fun living in a tent, but if it means I'll knock Skelton out early rather than go through a war again, I'll suffer it," he said.

"It's like living half-way up Mount Everest. Because the air is so thin it felt at first like my lungs were on fire and I couldn't breath and it was absolute hell.

"My trainer Jim McDonnell has noticed a phenomenal improvement in my stamina and strength and reckons that the fight won't even go past six rounds."

Lance Armstrong, Wayne Rooney and David Beckham are all said to have used oxygen tents in a bid to improve stamina or speed recovery from injury.
