Bruno sorry over drug shame
04/11/2006
Former heavyweight boxer Frank Bruno has today apologised for relapsing into cocaine use.
The 44-year-old said sorry to his family and friends, as well as fans, through his agent David Davies.
"Frank has said that he is very sorry that this has happened. He has apologised to his family, he would also like to apologise to his friends and fans. This will not happen again," a statement said.
The agent was responding to an article in the Sun newspaper that alleged Bruno had snorted the class A drug with a prostitute last week at his home in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.
"I got high on the stuff and I'm deeply ashamed. This was a one-off though. I have promised my daughters I will never touch the filthy stuff again - and it's a promise I intend to keep," the ex-WBC heavyweight champion reportedly told the tabloid.
Bruno retired ten years ago after losing his belt to Mike Tyson; suffering an eye injury in the process, but last year revealed in his autobiography that he had spent six using cocaine in 2000, vowing to never use it again.
The father of four suffered a mental breakdown in 2003 and was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
