Calzaghe: Hand is bruised but not broken
08/03/2006
Newly crowned IBF champion Joe Calzaghe has been told his hand injury is not as serious as first feared.
The Welshman delivered a devastating performance on Saturday night at the MEN Arena to defeat American Jeff Lacy on points in a 12-round demolition.
However, after a demonstration of boxing finesse, there were fears that the WBO champion was struggling with a broken hand.
Now Calzaghe says he as been given the all-clear and spoke of his determination to make the most of his dramatic victory over the much-fancied American.
"My hand is sore but fortunately it's not broken, just badly bruised," he told the BBC.
"Pounding someone for 12 rounds you're going to get hand trouble!"
He added: "I've shown I'm not just a good fighter but one of the great British fighters - that's not from my mouth but from what I read and what people are saying about the fight.
"My boxing business is not finished yet. I'm going to enjoy this for a few weeks now, suck up the glory, but you're only as good as your last fight and there will be another fight soon."
Calzaghe is now contemplating a summer clash with another American, with the victory over Lacy raising the prospect of another fight with a big name.
