Calzaghe announces split from Warren
24/06/2008
Super-middleweight and light-heavyweight champion boxer Joe Calzaghe has announced he has split with his promoter Frank Warren.
The 36-year-old, who is unbeaten in his professional career, has been associated with the Briton's well-known stable for 12 years.
Calzaghe earned a points victory over Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas in April, and it now appears this was his last bout as part of Warren's Sports Network organisation.
"I am now a free agent with no contract," Calzaghe told the South Wales Argus, adding he will manage himself until the end of his career.
Last week on the BBC programme Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, Calzaghe said his next fight will likely be his final fight before he retires.
And he reiterated to the Welsh newspaper the claim he made on the programme - stating that American boxer Roy Jones Jr would be his preferred opponent for the fight.
"My intention is to fight Roy Jones Jr, a four-weight world champion fighter," Calzaghe continued.
"That would be a special event for me against a legend of the sport.
"There are issues to be resolved with my former promoter Frank Warren and I hope they can be done so amicably."
