Calzaghe camp offers new bait to Taylor
12/04/2007
Joe Calzaghe's hunt for top-class opposition has intensified with an improved offer being made to American Jermain Taylor for a September clash in Cardiff.
The WBO super-middleweight champion dispatched Peter Manfredo inside three rounds at the weekend and has already pencilled in German-based Russian Denis Inkin for a July bout in London.
But the Welshman is still chasing a career-defining fight, and the accompanying bumper pay-day, and has urged promoter Frank Warren to return to the negotiating table with the talented middleweight Taylor after a $3 million purse failed to capture his signature.
"Joe only wants to fight the best man out there and that is Jermain," Warren said.
"I know Jermain wants to fight only the biggest fights and make the most money, just like Joe, and to do that we need to hold the fight over here where we can build on the record attendance Joe established last weekend.
"We will even provide a bit of home cooking to go along with the $4 million purse and agree to have an American assigned to referee the fight."
If the renewed attempt to land Taylor for a money-spinning match-up fails then other possibilities, such as WBC and WBA super-middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler and American Bernard Hopkins, could step into the breach.
