Calzaghe confirms broken hand
10/04/2007
WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe has confirmed that he suffered a fractured hand in his title fight against Peter Manfredo Jr on Saturday night.
The Welshman stopped his American challenger in the third round of the fight in Cardiff at the weekend but confirmed today that he had suffered a reoccurrence of an ongoing injury problem.
Calzaghe entered the ring for his IBF/IBO/WBO unification fight against Jeff Lacey last October despite limited preparation due to a hand problem.
And in his fight before that, against Evans Ashira, Calzaghe also broke his hand. However, he does not expect his latest setback to prevent him taking on another big-name fighter this summer, as expected.
"I shouldn't be out for too long, probably about four weeks," he said.
"I'm disappointed that I fractured my hand but that's boxing and injuries happen.
"I'll be back to light training in preparation for the proposed July date, which I am really excited about."
Possible opponents for Calzaghe in July include American Roy Jones Jr, middleweight title-holder Jermain Taylor or Russia's Denis Inkin.
