Calzaghe offered golden light-heavyweight carrot

17/07/2006

Joe Calzaghe is considering a lucrative payday fight proposal which would see him move up a division to take on light-heavyweight king Clinton Woods.

Promoter Dennis Hobson is to offer the IBF and WBO super-middleweight champion £1.5 million to take on Woods, reigning IBF light-heavyweight champ, in what would be a massive all British showdown.

There are two potential stumbling blocks to the deal, however, with both fighters needing to win their next matches and Hobson having to reach agreement with fierce rival prompter Frank Warren.

Calzaghe is taking to the ring in October against an unnamed opponent while Woods is fighting in September, most likely against Glen Johnson.

But it could be the out-of-ring clash between Hobson and Warren that proves most problematic to the fight with neither promoter keen to play second fiddle.

However, Hobson, of the Fight Academy, has said: "I'm ready to sit down with my counterpart, Frank Warren, and put this fight together.

"Clinton Woods v Joe Calzaghe is the biggest main event in British boxing and it would be a dereliction of duty for us to allow it to go begging because of promotional rivalries."

Hobson added that Woods will receive a substantial pay packet for the fight, originally due for 2004, if it is agreed to.

"With us promoting the fight I'll be able to pay Clinton what I know he is worth as a world champion and as the best light-heavyweight on the planet," he added.
