Calzaghe rubbishes Froch claims
17/11/2007
Undisputed world super middleweight champion Joe Calazghe has poured cold water on fellow Briton Carl Froch's chances of facing him in the ring.
After adding Mikkel Kessler's WBA and WBC titles to his WBO belt, Calzaghe has become one of the most prized scalps in the sport.
The undefeated 30-year-old is currently eyeing a stateside clash with veteran American Bernard Hopkins and insisted in the South Wales Argus that Froch lacked the skills or the profile to make a match worth his while.
"Coming off the biggest fight of my life and with my stock as high as it's ever been, it's a joke to think I'd fight Froch," Calzaghe said.
"I feel I've earned the right to go after the biggest fights possible and I have beaten everyone there is to beat at super-middleweight.
"If Froch fought Mikkel Kessler it'd be a very one-sided fight so what could I possibly get out of fighting Froch now?
"There would be zero interest in America and it'd be a fight I would need a lot of motivating for."
Nottingham's Froch will next fight unbeaten Russian Denis Inkin in a WBC final eliminator, but he had hoped that Calzaghe, who has admitted that he aims to be retired in a year's time, would still be available for an Anglo-Welsh clash.
There seems little chance of that now however with Calzaghe's camp set on a select few money-spinning bouts with which to sign off on the Newbridge southpaw's career.
