Calzaghe stalks Taylor
07/05/2007
Super middleweight world champion Joe Calzaghe will cross the Atlantic in a bid to lure American star Jermain Taylor into a big-money clash.
The Little Rock fighter has dominated the middleweight divisions and is seen as one of the few opponents who could provide Calzaghe with a career-defining bout after 20 successful defences of his WBO crown.
Taylor will fight Cory Spinks in Memphis on May 19th and Calzaghe has promised to be a large and vocal presence in the expensive seats.
I will be sat at ringside and will tell any of the media in attendance that care to listen how keen I am to face Taylor," he told the South Wales Argus.
In his last outing Calzaghe stopped former reality-tv star Peter Manfredo inside three rounds to improve his record to 43 fights unbeaten.
An injury to his hand sustained in the victory has proved less severe than first feared with scans ruling out a break and the 35-year-old is now determined to pin Taylor down to a money-spinning meeting.
"I think this fight would be absolutely huge, rivalling anything in boxing in years, two undefeated champions very rarely get the opportunity to meet one another," he said.
"If 35,000 people came to see me take on Peter Manfredo Jr, just imagine how many would want to see one of the fights of the decade."
