De la Hoya plans final bout

08/05/2006

Oscar de la Hoya is planning to sign off his boxing career with one last high profile bout.

The American, dubbed "Golden Boy", stopped Ricardo Mayorga in Las Vegas on Saturday night to reclaim the WBC light-middleweight title.

De la Hoya was in fine form and described the fight afterwards as one of the five best of his career.

His technical superiority was evident as Mayorga failed to back up his pre-fight rhetoric.

The 33-year-old from Los Angeles had been out of the ring since 2004 pursuing his business interests, but was desperate to reclaim his title after losing to Bernard Hopkins.

De la Hoya's people are now looking to line up one last major fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr the most likely opponent, although Britain's Joe Calzaghe is also thought to be in the frame.

Following his defeat of Mayorga, De la Hoya said a long-standing shoulder injury and a slight tear in a forearm muscle would not scupper his plans to get back in the ring before the end of the year.

September 16th has been pencilled in for his sign-off fight.
