Eubank arrested after truck demo

22/02/2007

Boxer Chris Eubank has been arrested after driving his truck through central London in protest at Prince Harry's deployment in Iraq.

The renowned royalist drove his large black truck through the streets of Whitehall this afternoon with a banner attacking prime minister Tony Blair.

TV pictures showed Mr Eubank, a former world champion, being arrested by Metropolitan police officers while wearing a three-piece suit.

The banner accused Mr Blair of sending Prince Harry, the 22-year-old third heir to the throne, to fight in Iraq in order to "make your catastrophic illegal war…plausible".

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman confirmed that a man had been arrested in Whitehall and taken to a central police station, believed to be Charing Cross station, for further questioning.

It is understood he was arrested on suspicion of breaching the peace.

Mr Eubank's protest came after it was confirmed this morning that Prince Harry would be part of the latest deployment to southern Iraq after his regiment, the Blues and Royals, was selected for a tour of duty expected to last six months.

"Whilst in Iraq Cornet Wales will carry out a normal troop commander's role, involving leading a troop of 12 men in four Scimitar armoured reconnaissance vehicles, each with a crew of three," a joint statement from the Ministry of Defence and Clarence House read.

Mr Eubank retired from boxing with a 45-5 win/loss record and was WBO middleweight and supermiddleweight champion during his colourful career.
