Former British boxing champ jailed

12/05/2006

Former world featherweight boxing champion 'Prince' Naseem Hamed has been jailed for 15 months for reckless driving and seriously injuring another motorist in an accident. He has also banned from driving for four years.

Hamed, 32, from Dore in Sheffield, caused 38-year-old Anthony Burgin multiple injuries when his £300,000 Mercedes sports car collided head on with two other vehicles near his home last May.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at Sheffield crown court last month and returned there today for his sentence.

The prison sentence effectively ends any aspiration Hamed had of making a sensational return to the sport he dominated in the late 90s.

Hamed made 15 successful defences of the WBO featherweight title and lost just once during his 36 professional fight career when Marco Antonio Barrera stunned him in Las Vegas in April 2001.

He fought once more after that, winning back his belt against Manuel Calvo in May 2002, but, despite constant rumours linking him with a return to the ring, has not boxed since.
