Froch retains titles
27/05/2006
Carl Froch has retained his British and Commonwealth super-middleweight crowns after an 11th round knockout of Brian Magee.
In an excellent contest, both fighters boxed well but it was the champion who ultimately came out on top.
A left uppercut ended the contest and Magee needed medical attention, including oxygen, in the York Hall ring in London after the fight.
It was the second time that Magee had hit the canvas on the night as in the early stages of the first round, a short right uppercut did the damage for Froch.
However, as the champion looked to finish off the fight, Magee dug in and worked his way back into the contest.
He was particular successful with his right and he opened up a cut underneath Froch's right eye midway through the fight.
The closeness of the bout was displayed in the fifth when both fighters traded punches which looked to be taking their toll.
The champion was only one point ahead on two of the three judges scorecards when he finished the fight in the 11th, knocking Magee momentarily unconscious.
Afterwards, Froch paid tribute to Magee.
"It is the most meaningful win of my career because Magee has been in there with some of the top operators and has much more experience than me," Froch said.
It was the 28-year-olds 19th straight win.
