Gammer defends title
14/10/2006
Scott Gammer has retained the British heavyweight title on points after being taken the full 12 rounds against Micky Steeds.
The 29-year-old Welshman remained in control throughout the battle and although he was unable to land the knock-out punch, all three judges gave him the fight.
Steeds put in a good show, allowing his opponent to do the leg work early on before using his jab to good effect in the later rounds.
The east Londoner was given little chance before the fight after stepping in to replace Danny Williams but he refused to be intimidated and landed a few good blows.
Gammer however, was just too good and as the rounds continued he began to stamp his authority on the contest.
A left hook to Steeds' chin in the fifth had the 23-year-old rocking but he did not go down and continued to use his jab, although more often than not his hits were simply absorbed by Gammer.
It was the first time the undefeated Gammer had gone a whole 12 rounds but it was clear he could have gone on if he had needed to.
In fact, as the fight continued he grew in stature and was awarded the victory with one judge scoring 120-108 in his favour, while the other two both scored it 118-110.
