Gammer tips the scales ahead of Williams clash

01/03/2007

British heavyweight champion Scott Gammer has weighed in at a career-high 17st 1lb ahead of his title defence against Danny Williams in Neath on Friday night.

His opponent will enter the ring considerably lighter at 16st 4lbs, but Gammer's promoter Paul Boyce has no concerns about his client's preparation for the fight.

"Scott bulked up as he thought Danny would be heavier, but he is still fit," he said.

The 30-year-old Welsh title-holder is determined to simultaneously finish Williams' career and throw himself into the media spotlight with a resounding win in front of a partisan crowd.

"There are a lot of top fighters from Britain out there and I seem to get largely ignored. But Williams is a big name and people will be watching this fight and they will see just what I can do," he said.

In addition to nearly a stone in weight, Williams is giving away three years of experience to the champion, but he insists that entering the last-chance saloon has left him with no choice but to win.

"I just want to show people I am not finished, but really it is about taking this fight to see what I have got left and then deciding where I am going to go from there," he said.

Williams' patchy professional record consists of 36 wins and six defeats and has taken in a victory over Mike Tyson and a valiant loss in a world title fight against Vitali Klitschko as well as two recent defeats to Matt Skelton and Audley Harrison.
