Harrison Guzman fight reset for May
09/03/2006
Scott Harrison will make the ninth defence of his WBO featherweight title against Joan Guzman of the Dominican Republic in Northern Ireland on May 20th.
The Scottish fighter was due to meet the number one challenger at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow on March 25th but was forced to withdraw because of a mouth abscess.
But the fight will now go ahead at Belfast's King's Hall, a venue Harrison will be making his first appearance at, two months after the scheduled bout.
The evening's undercard will include Belfast's Eamonn Magee facing Margate's Takaloo for the WBU welterweight title.
Harrison won the WBO featherweight belt in June 2002 after he defeated Puerto Rican Victor Santiago at the Braehead Arena.
He temporarily lost the title in 2003 after he was defeated by Mexican Manuel Medina but he won the rematch just four months later.
Peter Harrison, Scott's father and trainer, revealed earlier this week that the 28-year-old champ was in no fit state to make the initial March date defence.
"Scott's training has been a nightmare from the start," Harrison senior said. "He developed a cold in the first week, but everything seemed OK following the birth of his daughter, Maria.
"But then Scott was hit by a gum infection and was forced to return from [his training camp in] Fort William to visit his dentist. Things have got worse since then and Scott phoned me on Sunday morning to say his neck was swollen."
Promoter Frank Warren has been informed of the news and said, while it is unfortunate, he is determined to still put out a top-class bill, which will also include Amir Khan.
Commonwealth heavyweight champion Danny Williams is expected to feature, despite winning a bruising encounter with British heavyweight champion Matt Skelton just last month.
